fishing Destin Florida July 2016

July is when gag grouper season reopens. red snapper will also be open part of July in Florida waters.  There will be many offshore game tournaments that happen during the summer. There will be great catches of wahoo, dolphin, tuna, swordfish, and marlin. Kings, Bonita, Dolphin and a few Spanish will be close to shore on wrecks, reefs, fads.  Bottom fishing will find good results catching vermillion snapper, red snapper, gag grouper, red grouper, scamp, and almaco jacks.

Let’s take a look at several different types of offshore fish to catch:

Wahoo Fishing

You need to fish along edges, deep water wrecks, weed lines and rips. It is best to troll with Yo-Zuri bonita, and deep running plugs ballyhoo rigged on an Islander or soft head lure. Troll 5-8 knots, down riggers and outriggers can be very effective allowing you to fish multiple lines at multiple depths.

Dolphin Fishing

Look for dolphin by finding weed lines, rips, and floating debris. Also look for diving birds and frigate birds working the area.

Troll feathers, ballyhoo, live cigar minnows or herring. Smaller lures tend to catch more dolphin.  When trolling fish between 4 and 8 knots.

White and Blue Marlin

Marlin can be caught between May and October. Most Marlin are caught at the Spur, Nipple, Squiggies, and the Offshore rigs. Catch Marlin with ballyhoo, squid, large acrylic lures (Black Bart) soft heads, live bridlied bonita and hardtails. Marlin speeds are 5 to 12 knots. Marlin like weed lines and rips. That is also where you will find a good connection of baitfish.

Swordfish

Swordfish are mostly caught around the Spur fishing the north wall. Most are caught using large offshore squid. Whole bonita and northern mackerel.  While you can catch swordfish in the daylight, the best time to fish is at night. You need to fish 3 lines at 50ft, 100 Ft., and 200 Ft. depths.

Yellowfin Tuna

These fish bite all year at the rigs, the prime time however is May through November. Most are caught at the Nipple, Spur, Steps, Squiggles and Rigs.

Tuna can be caught in the daytime trolling ballyhoo, cedar plugs and bullet head lures. Look for birds working baits or pods of porpoises as many times you will find the tuna mixed in with the porpoise.

At night catch the tuna jigging or chunking.
